
Theme songs make movies recognizable
Movie theme songs benefit the viewers to familiarize themselves in the movies that they had watched.
Movie theme songs can serve several objective that are either significant on the sensitive side of the movie and it can help in enhancing the story telling.
It is used to add emotion and rhythm to a film and in movies usually not meant to be noticeable, it often provides a tone or an emotional feel toward the story and the characters expected for it often foreshadows a change in mood.
Like in the pirates of the Carribean film, when Jack Sparrow enters on the boat with the movie’s theme song, it creates a sense of triumph and victory whenever it plays even though the boat is sinking, one can tell beforehand that all will be determined.
According to film composer Bernard Herrmann, “I feel that music on the screen can seek out and intensify the inner thoughts of the characters. It can invest a scene with terror, grandeur, gaiety, or misery. It can propel narrative swiftly forward, or slow it down. It often lifts mere dialogue into the realm of poetry. Finally, it is the communicating link between the screen and the audience, reaching out and enveloping all into one single experience”.
Though an audience might think of film as an amazing visual experience, it cannot afford to underestimate the importance of film sound because a well thought after sound track is often as complicated as the image on the screen.
According to the book Brain Research, “it is an intriguing stimulus widely used in movies to increase the emotional experience of the audiences or the viewers”.
It is an important part of a film because it sets the tone for each scene, and action even when dialogue is not present the music tells a major part of the story such as feelings for it gives someone an idea of what the character at that point and time is feeling as a part of silent film music was the catalyst of suspense, comedy, action, and horror.
According to studies, it also create a more convincing atmosphere of time and place, emphasizes psychological refinements, serves as a kind of neutral background filler building a sense of continuity, supports the theatrical build-up of a scene, and turning with a sense of finality.
